Balakian walked among the displaced for months before he fled, disguising himself variously as a German engineer, a soldier, and a worker in the vineyards He began this book while in hiding. Published in Armenian in 1922 and in 1959, this new English translation was done by Balakian's great-nephew. While not a formal history of the genocide, this rare first-hand account is informed by Balakian's considerable knowledge of the unfolding monumental crime.
