Description:By Susan D. Bachrach
Product Detail:A Publication of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

This book is perfect for middle school sports enthusiasts and as well as readers with advanced interest in the Olympic Games and the history of propaganda.

In August 1936, Adolf Hitler's Nazi dictatorship scored a huge propaganda success as host of the Summer Olympics in Berlin. For two weeks, the Nazis camouflaged their racist, militaristic character while hosting the Summer Games. Minimizing its anti-Semitic agenda and plans for territorial expansion, the regime impressed many foreign spectators and journalists with an image of a peaceful, tolerant Germany. The United States and other western democracies rejected a boycott and missed the opportunity to take a stand that might have restrained Hitler and bolstered international resistance to Nazi tyranny. Alas, The Games were a brief interlude in Germany's escalating campaign against its Jewish population and the country's march toward World War II and the Holocaust.
